About the museum

The South Tyrolean Museum of Hunting and Fishing in Wolfsthurn Castle forms part of the South Tyrolean regional museums. The Museum, like the South Tyrolean Wine Museum in Kaltern, is incorporated into the South Tyrolean Folklore Museum.

History & concept

As regional councillor for hunting and fishing for many years, Luis Durnwalder was the driving force in the establishment of the hunting and fishing museum. In 1986 Wolfsthurn Castle was discussed as a possible site. Its location, size and condition were decisive, although it was never actually used as a hunting seat. In 1989 the Museum of Hunting and Fishing was administratively incorporated into the Folklore Museum in Dietenheim. The nobles’wing of the castle became the seat of the museum, while the castle itself remained in the private possession of the Sternbach family. After extensive restoration and conversion works to the roof, façade, garden as well as to the stucco and furnishings within the castle interior, the Museum of Hunting and Fishing opened on 29 June 1996.
